The treatment of Deeper veins by Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy(UGS)
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy(UGS) is a way of treating subcutaneous veins without surgery. This procedure may be suitable for those people who have had a recurrence of their problems after surgery, do not want surgery, cannot afford surgery or cannot take time off work to recover from surgery.
Some people are not suitable for UGS and Dr Kraft will discuss your suitability with you. Treatment at the earliest stage will help avoid the possible expensive and debilitating complications including leg ulcers, stasis dermatitis and thrombophlebitis.
Dr Kraft will scan your legs with ultrasound scanner to locate the abnormal veins and inject a precise amount of sclerosant solution into the vein. This has the effect of sealing the vein off at that point. This will prevent abnormal flow down the vein. Usually several injections are required.
If you have more than one vein that needs treatment, usually performed at three month follow up visit(very large veins have a 40% chance of requiring more than 1 treatment).
Following the procedure you are required to wear the graduated venous compression stocking for 2 weeks. As with other forms of sclerotherapy you must walk for at least 30 minutes on each day that the stocking is on. It is essential that you walk for 30 minutes immediately after the procedure and it is a good idea to walk for 30 minutes several times per day for the first 3 days following treatment (or whenever the leg aches.)
It is usual for there to be some tenderness, lumpiness, hardness and bruising/ discoloration along the line of the treated veins.
Your first review appointment will usually be 2 weeks following UGS to check your progress. A further review appointment, including a scan will usually be after 1 month. Please always bring your stocking to every appointment.
